Three AAR Alumni Are Named 2018 United States Artists Fellows

Features - Abigail DeVille

United States Artists has awarded fellowships to forty-five artists and collectives across nine creative disciplines. Among the recipients are two Rome Prize winners: the Bronx-based installation artist Abigail DeVille (2018 Fellow) and the architect Thomas Kelley (2014 Fellow) with his collaborative partner, Carrie Norman. The composer and conductor Tania León, a Resident Fellow in 1998, was also a winner.

Fellowships from United States Artists, founded in 2006 by the Ford, Rockefeller, Rasmuson, and Prudential Foundations, honor the creative accomplishments of contemporary artists and support their ongoing creative and professional development. Fellows for this year were selected by a panel of experts in nine disciplinary categories—architecture and design, craft, dance, media, music, theater and performance, traditional arts, visual art, and writing—and then approved by the organization’s board. Each recipient receives an unrestricted $50,000 cash award.

Read about DeVille’s plans for her time at the American Academy in Rome, as well as her interview with Frieze that was published in July. Kelley discussed his Rome Prize project in an interview from March 2014.
